Grow: A Creative Community

For the past 10 months Sarah Munnings and I have been developing an idea. Our idea has turned into reality and is now happening.  We are developing Grow: A Creative Community  in response to feedback from local artists and artisans. Our vision is to create a collaborative community hub, a flexible workspace and learning hub for creative businesses that do not fit the current flexible working arrangements due to the nature of their business and their flexible needs. Being in a community of crafters and makers and knowing this community already exists, we realised there is a lack of meeting/collaborative space of this kind in the SE suburbs of Melbourne. The aim of the hub is to provide connection in a fragmented industry. Makers are Read More

Make of the Week – Vintage kimono panel skirt

Today I had a meeting with the Mayor of Monash, Rebecca Paterson. The meeting was scheduled for 12 noon. So at  9.30 this morning I decided to make a skirt to wear to the meeting. I had made a dress yesterday, but today it just didn’t feel right. As often is the case, an idea for the design just popped into my head and I decided to go with it, (and it was a good distraction for the meeting). Make of the week – Marbled zip purse

This was such a great experience for me. A great friend offered to teach me some marbling techniques. Robyn (she was featured in the Weaving Stories through Craft blog), has been marbling for many years, mainly on paper, but some fabrics. Obviously I was interested in marbling on to fabrics. We started by using three colours and it was really fascinating to see how the paints acted once they hit the solution and then how they reacted with each other. Once I felt more confident with the process, I added a fourth colour and Robyn showed Read More

Radio interview

My 5 minutes of fame. My interview for Richard Stockman’s Big Brunch was on Saturday 22nd October on 1377 3MP. The interview was  part of the Never Walk Alone segment which is all about community. It is very brief but so wonderful to be able to have the opportunity to share the story behind Woven by Society. I was also able to mention the Opening Doors Community Leadership program and some of the work I am doing in collaboration with Our Little Caravan: The collective store. Here is the interview…

What is Woven by Society?

I have been asked a few times lately – “What is Woven by Society?” Well, this is the best way I can describe it – Woven by Society was a concept I started thinking about last year. By December I actually resigned from my job to follow my dream of creating Woven by Society. It was not easy to resign and leave the security of a job I had known for a long time, but it felt right. I wanted to do something I could be proud of and use all the skills that made me, me. Most importantly I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I wanted to create a community of women that could teach, learn, Read More
