This week’s hint of summer in Melbourne (and the upcoming Spring Carnival) inspired me to make this dress. I used the gorgeous Marimekko Puketti fabric I bought in Auckland’s Bolt of Cloth store. (And I must say, the staff were amazing – so friendly and helpful). I’m really enjoying this shift dress design – it is simple yet stylish.
As soon as I saw this fabric, I connected with it and knew it was coming home with me. It reminded me of a 70’s retro dress my mum used to have. The light blue with the red and white flower pattern is happy and cheerful with the perfect blend of colours. I decided to use the red and feature it as the contrast in the neckband, arm bands and belt. It is enough of a pop highlight the red in the flowers.
The slight gather at the neckline is really simple, but adds such a lovely feature to the dress. I’m really looking forward to working with this pattern and design this week in my workshops. This dress will forever remind me of our last New Zealand get away, as well as 70’s styles my mum wore.
