This was such a great experience for me. A great friend offered to teach me some marbling techniques. Robyn (she was featured in the Weaving Stories through Craft blog), has been marbling for many years, mainly on paper, but some fabrics. Obviously I was interested in marbling on to fabrics. I really love the idea of being able to create your own designs and patterns, with different colours combinations and techniques…the options and outcomes are limitless.
We started by using three colours and it was really fascinating to see how the paints acted once they hit the solution and then how they reacted with each other. Once I felt more confident with the process, I added a fourth colour and Robyn showed me how to create different patterns by using a skewer. It was great to experiment with different fabrics and paints to see how changing one element in the process gave such a different outcome in results.
I learned so much just by giving it a go and not being too scared to experiment.
After rinsing the fabrics and letting the paints set, I was eager to create something. I decided on a quick and simple zip bag. I really wanted to accentuate the marbled fabric so I chose a co-ordinating piping and contrast for the top of the bag. The lining picks up on the fourth colour.
I am really pleased with the outcome of the fabric and the zip purse. I love how the right fabrics, especially unique ones, can make a simple design pretty special.
